Blog Tour w/Review: Beauty and the Bayou

Time for another visit to Autre, Louisiana, and I could not be happier!

This has fast become one of my favorite series. The setting is intriguing, the characters are realistic and likable, and the interactions are honest and humorous.

In Beauty in the Bayou, we get Sawyer and Juliet. Readers of the first two books (particularly Sweet Home Louisiana) will remember Juliet as the sister of Chase, the frat boy who stole an airboat and crashed into the dock.

I particularly liked how Maddie, Josh, and Owen (who met her in the last book) seemed to have already sensed that she would be perfect for Sawyer. This kind of intuition about family is one of the things that make the Landry clan so appealing.

My notes in the book consist of “love this moment,” and “this is a great scene,” so I won’t bore you with the details. You can read it yourself and find your favorites. But there are a few things that I would like to highlight.

I love how the author’s heroes always surprise both the women they fall for and, in turn, the reader. So often, heroes can be one-dimensional. They are brooding, or cold, or a playboy until they meet “the one.”

Ms. Nicholas’ heroes are multi-dimensional. Just as Josh surprised Tori in My Best Friend’s Mardi Gras Wedding, Sawyer surprises Juliet when he offers to braid her hair to keep it out of the way. There is no big announcement about it; it’s just a matter-of-fact part of his character. And, honestly, it makes him that much more attractive.

I liked the way Chase’s development paralleled Sawyer’s. It illustrated how much a loving, supportive family could influence a person’s path. That’s an important point, especially in today’s day and age.

But my favorite moment came near the end when Cooper stated that everyone needed someone to balance them out. Not only did that make Juliet realize her total feelings for Sawyer, but it was also an excellent commentary on relationships in general. People often talk about a “perfect match” when it really should be a “perfect complement.”

There are other character observations that give Ms. Nicholas’ books added depth, such as when Sawyer realizes that he both loves and hates the bayou; that can apply to anything that is important in one’s life, I think.

My only complaint was that a plot point towards the end involving Gus seemed to be very rushed. The build-up made the issue seem vital, and then it was over in a sentence. I would have liked to have seen that in more detail because it could have been a “big moment.” But that’s being nitpicky. I still loved everything else about this book.

As each member of the Landry family has met their match, I get a little bit sadder, because I am afraid that the author will run out of people surrounding this fantastic group. I’m hoping she keeps finding ways to revisit them.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I am always excited to revisit the Landry family in Autre. They are currently my favorite group of recurring characters across the many series I read. This time out, it’s Sawyer who meets his match in the form of Juliet. You can read the synopsis for the plot line. Personally, I really appreciated how Juliet and Sawyer understood each other. They didn’t try to fix each other, they just “were” with each other. I did feel like the end was a little rushed, but that’s a minor point. I will read anything with these characters, and I can’t wait for Kennedy’s story. This review was written based on a complimentary, pre-release digital ARC of the book.

Book Review: Then Came You

Let me start by saying that I love Kate Meader, and am predisposed to liking anything that she writes. I loved the first book in the Laws of Attraction series, but somehow missed the second one (which I am going to remedy this weekend).

Then Came You is the third in the series, and it is the story of Grant and Aubrey. As per my usual standards, I’m not going to give away major details of how or why they were together before (that’s for blurbs and other reviews). I will say that I enjoyed the fact that I didn’t put together the history of the two right away. And even when I did, the author didn’t go in the usual direction of why the first time around didn’t stick for the two.

These are two strong characters, and it was the second book in a week where the mains shared a profession (the first was Better Than Me). In this case, Grant and Aubrey are both lawyers. I am finding that I like the “battle of the sexes” aspect of the two characters on a level playing field. It adds another dimension to the stories. Plus, it made for a hilarious scene at the beginning of the book!

The strength of the characters also allowed the author to explore their weaknesses. In other words, the plot wasn’t overly complicated with job issues or other distractions; the focus was solely the characters and the events that immediately impacted them within the story.

There isn’t much more that I can say without giving plot points away. I liked the style of the writing, I became invested in the characters…oh, and Aubrey has one of the most dysfunctional, messed up families I’ve ever seen! I love how Cat Damon expresses himself. And I want Libby to be my grandmother.

Side note: would love to see a story focusing on Libby’s younger days…that would be a blast to read!

Anyway, it was a great book, and I am grateful to the author, Loveswept, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read it. Highly recommended.

I thoroughly enjoyed this second-chance romance, because it had a different feel to it than many others. I liked how the author didn’t allow the reader to know precisely what had happened the first time around right away; instead, it unfolded gradually. The slow roll-out of the facts made the actual revelation of what had caused Grant and Aubrey’s break up more of a gut punch. It also gave the reader more of an insight into each of their characters. I loved the juxtaposition of their childhoods (Aubrey’s family is sooo messed up) and thought that the characters remained true to themselves throughout the book. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a smart second-chance romance. BOOK REVIEW: Cougar by M.A. Foster

I read a lot of historical books, both fiction and non-fiction. I’m used to seeing a list of characters at the beginnings of those because the stories are often epic, convoluted, and it’s hard to keep people straight.

That type of list is not something I am used to seeing in a romance novel.

When I first opened Cougar on my Kindle and had to scroll through multiple pages of characters, I thought “Oh boy, this might be too much work.” But the plot sounded interesting, so I stuck with it.

And I am so very glad I did. Because I absolutely loved every second of this book!

I’ll admit, there were a few times where I thought, “who the hell is this person?” and I couldn’t tell you who some of the others were, but it doesn’t matter, because this was one epic story of love, loss, and second chances.

Y’all know that I don’t do plot recaps. Suffice to say that life events force Emerson to return to her hometown of Heritage Bay, FL after decades of being away. Her life has taken many twists over the years, and she always swore she would never go back. She has an amazing, supportive family and lots of friends. As life continues to throw curve balls at her, she grows and comes to new understandings about herself and the people who surround her.

That’s kind of simplistic, because there is was more to the story than that. Late in the book, one of the characters says, “Hold on, let me get Jerry Springer on the line.” My note at that point reads, “describes the entire book, right here.”

There are lots of baby mamas and daddies, but those connections don’t feel forced – they feel natural. In today’s world, convoluted relationships and webs of familial ties are totally normal. The author does an excellent job of weaving them all together.

I particular liked how the adults’ histories with each other caused them to judge and react to their teens’ experiences in different ways. There were cases of history repeating itself, and cases where the adults had learned from their past choices. This was an interesting facet to the character motivations.

Ultimately, however, it’s Emerson’s story about how she continues life after faced with tragedy. I will say that Cam (her ex-best friend’s brother, and her own brother’s best friend (see what I mean?)) is a great character – a perfect combination of devotion and dedication. He can be my latest BB any time! Bonus points for being a baseball player.

In some ways, this review is hard to write, because I can’t really isolate small events from the larger overarching plot. Another note I have is “the writer takes us along on the journey and what an effed up but marvelously epic journey it is.”

(Yeah, I make notes like that as I read. Helps me remember what I was thinking as I read it instead of trying to pull it all back up later).

Even though it’s the third in the Heritage Bay series, it was the first one I read and I can’t wait to go back and read the first two. I highly recommend Cougar and hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I did. Go get it. Now! (It’s currently $2.99, but free on KU!)

This story sucked me in and wouldn’t let me go. The characters were well-rounded, and “real.” I especially loved the message of finding love amidst heartbreak, and that sometimes it’s right in front of you where you least expect it. And (oh yeah) Cam is one of the best book boyfriends I’ve ever had the pleasure of “meeting.” I loved this book and can’t recommend it enough!
