Blog Tour w/Review: Crazy Rich Cajuns

I have loved this series from the very beginning, from the introduction of Josh and Tori, through Maddie’s return to the Bayou (and Owen), and Sawyer’s rediscovery of life (with the help of Juliet). The Autre universe and its inhabitants, the crazy Landry clan, is one of my favorite places in all of the books I have read. I have patiently waited for Kennedy’s story, and I am happy to say that I was not disappointed.

Crazy Rich Cajuns is hands down my favorite of the series.  But I do have a love/hate relationship with it (more on that later).

First up, all of the good stuff. I know I am going to forget some because there was so much to love about this book. The chemistry between Bennett and Kennedy has grown throughout the series, and it bursts into flame in this book. The balancing act they do as they explore each other and come to individual realizations is both hot and touching.

(Yeah, that’s a fine line to walk, and the author does it masterfully).

Kennedy has been a spitfire all along, but she has another side that Bennett (and his family) bring out, and it is beautiful to see. Her scenes at Bennett’s house are some of my favorites I have ever read. It’s easy to say that something was funny, but the Flip Cup episode (dude, vanilla vodka) had tears running down my face. And Kennedy’s tales of treasure hunting were simply fantastic.

I loved the exploration of relationship roles. Kennedy’s interpretation of Leo and Ellie’s relationship and the recognition that both she and Bennett come to puts the convention of the Bayou on its ear, and it totally works for the story. The scene where Leo guides Bennett is priceless because it happens in typical Landry style.

I mentioned the chemistry was explosive, and that is mainly due to the juxtaposition of Bennett’s outer and inner character. On the surface, he seems very straightlaced and proper (at least in Kennedy’s eyes). But once he gets her alone and opens his mouth? Holy hell is it hot – and totally unexpected!

I know I am missing some parts, but honestly, I just loved the entire book. I devoured it in one sitting because I didn’t want to leave them, which brings me to the “hate” part of the love/hate relationship.

I hate that it’s pretty much the end of the Boys of the Bayou series. I like that we will be getting another installment with Chase (Juliet’s brother), so we will still get to visit Autre and the Landry clan, but I am so disappointed that the Landry family will no longer be central (as far as I can tell).

Oh well, I guess that’s what re-reads are for, right? And this is definitely a series that I will return to again and again. Do yourself a huge favor and pick up this entire series right now. You’ll find yourself wanting to book a trip to the Bayou.

Crazy Rich Cajuns (Boys of the Bayou, #4)Crazy Rich Cajuns by Erin Nicholas
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

No point in beating around the bush: this is by far my favorite book in the Boys of the Bayou series. Not only does it feature Kennedy, whose story I have been waiting for since her introduction, but the author turns convention on its head and takes the story out of the Bayou. One would think it would be a fish-out-of-water, but that’s not necessarily the case. The journey that both Kennedy and Bennett undertake as they explore their feelings is typical Erin Nicholas but with a hint of something else (no spoilers). This is one of the first books in a while that I was sad to see end because I wanted more of their chemistry. BOOK REVIEW: Nothing But Trouble by Amy Andrews

If you read enough books in any genre, they eventually all start to blend together. So, when you find one that stands out for any reason, it’s kind of like finding a diamond in the rough.

That’s how I feel about Nothing but Trouble by Amy Andrews. Even though it could easily fall into both the Sports Romance and Boss/Employee Romance categories, it’s much more than either one of those.

Cecilia (CC) has been the PA for former quarterback Wade Carter for nearly six years. As her contract is expiring, she is more than ready to leave the on-call 24/7 life behind and start a new life in California. Wade, however, has other plans. Fate probably has a little something to throw in as well.

I loved this book because it was different in quite a few ways. First, Wade is not the usual absolute monster/a-hole/jerk of a boss – more like just oblivious (which he eventually appropriately acknowledges). CC isn’t pining for him; she wants her contract to end so she can get on with her life. Both characters are thoroughly strong individuals.

I also liked the backstory that the author created to bring CC and Wade closer together. The plot point involving his home town was clever and unique. Even though I kind of sided with Wade initially, I loved how the author made her points about the strengths of females subtly. It all made sense when put into practice.

Some of my other favorite aspects of the novel:

  • The subplot concerning Wade’s brother, Wyatt, and a newcomer to town was poignant and well-written, adding a nice subtext to the overall story.
  • The snappy dialogue between CC and Wade. Their understanding of each other was apparent from the beginning and made me chuckle almost every time, especially during the “Gone With the Wind” references.
  • The author’s ability to create a picture for the scene at hand. A particularly moving passage was when Wade and CC were walking home from a party. The description of the streetlight and the sounds around them stands out.
  • The piglets

As I looked up the book for a reference, I noticed that it says “Credence, Colorado Book One.” I can only hope that we will get to follow Wade’s friends and some of the women in future books because Credence is a place I would love to revisit.

Nothing But Trouble (Credence Book 1)Nothing But Trouble by Amy Andrews
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I have been on a roll lately, finding some excellent romances that have interesting characters and well thought-out plots. Nothing But Trouble is the latest that fits the bill. Wade is a former pro quarterback; CC has been his PA for the past five+ years. It’s a trope that has been used many times (the boss finally realizes feelings for employee), but this story seemed different to me. One thing that made this book stand out is that the romance doesn’t take center stage; it almost occurs in the background as other events occur – I loved this aspect because it allowed me to get involved with the plot and other characters, which made the story more interesting. I especially enjoyed the plan for his hometown. The counterpoint sub-story of Wade’s brother Wyatt was well done and touching. All motivations and character actions seemed natural, and the events were enjoyable to read. I highly recommend this book. Please see my blog at firefliesandfreekicks.com for a more detailed review. “It’s got a Jill Shalvis/SEP vibe and I had a smile on my face all the way through. Loved every minute.” – Kate Meader, USA Todaybestselling author

Nothing But Trouble, an all-new small town romance from USA Todaybestselling author Amy Andrews, is available now!

Nothing But Trouble_1600.jpg

For five years, PA Cecilia Morgan’s entire existence has revolved around playing “left tackle” to former NFL quarterback Wade Carter. She’s so good at her job, the man can’t even buy his own condoms! Well, today she’s giving the Worst-Boss-Ever her notice.

To say CC’s announcement was a bombshell is an insult to bombs. And horribly timed, with his publisher breathing down his neck. Not too many things defy Wade Carter. Well…except his mother. His PA. And the blinking cursor of doom.

Time to call an audible.

CC is gobsmacked. Three months in his small hometown—somewhere devoid of “female distractions,” he says—while he finishes his book, and he’ll cut her loose?! And he thinks a cowboy hat and dimpled smile and she’ll just say yes? Penalty flag.

Wade can’t believe CC and the council arranged busloads of single women to visit their dying town. She never gives up. But three Super Bowl rings prove he’s no quitter, either.

But then their fighting starts to feel a whole lot like foreplay. What’s a quarterback to do when he realizes he might be falling for his left tackle?

Time to throw a Hail Mary.

Excerpt:

“And that’s where I had my first kiss.” CC tuned back in and focused on where Wade was pointing. It was the football field, a lush bright green amidst the faded wooden bleachers and the peeling goalposts. “Right there under those bleachers.” He smiled and sighed. “Kathy Williams. I became a man that day.” “It was that good, huh?” He laughed. “I suspect it was terrible at first.” He shook his head, and a tiny little hitch near CC’s heart snuck up and surprised the hell out of her. Her gaze was drawn to his profile, to the tilt of his lips. Usually those lips just exasperated the hell out of her, articulating his ridiculous demands, but, she had to admit, he had a great mouth. Kinda made a girl wonder what other demands lips like those could make. Not that she’d everwondered. Nor was she about to start. Crushing on her emotionally unavailable boss would be dumb. Especially when she was only a few months off never having to see him again. “I fumbled it badly, went like a bull at a gate. She pulled away and said, ‘softly, Wade,’ and then…” It was hard to believe Wade had ever fumbled anything. His had been the safest hands in the NFL. And he’d obviously improved beyond kissing, if that thing he did with his tongue was as good as Annabel had said. “Well…” He smiled, obviously still caught up in the memory. “Let’s just say she was patient, and I’m a fast learner.” “How old were you?” “I was fifteen. She was seventeen. The head cheerleader.” CC rolled her eyes. “How very Riverdaleof you.”

Book Review: Falling for the Beast

When I read the first in a duet or series, I am always hopeful that the second book will be the crescendo to a story that built slowly in the first book. Sometimes that happens, and sometimes the second book just falls flat. Unfortunately, this book falls in the latter category.

I thought that the first book, Beauty and the Professor was okay, and I had high hopes for this one. The characters and premise are interesting. The execution, however, does not do the story justice.

As I mentioned in the first review, there was a lot to work with, but nothing was as developed as it could have been. This was even more evident in the second book. It could have been so much more.

Even a pivotal scene with Blake’s family, which should have been fireworks and a major revelation, just fell flat. It all felt disconnected in some way. It’s sad because I usually like this author, but this duet did not reach its full potential. My Goodreads review is below.

Falling for the Beast (A Modern Fairy Tale Duet, #2)Falling for the Beast by Skye Warren
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This book picks up where Beauty and the Professor left off. Frankly, I was expecting more out of the second book. There was so much that could have been expanded upon: Erin’s thesis and the scandal, Blake’s parents and upbringing, his PTSD, his buddy in the hospital are just a few things I would have liked to have explored. But so much of it was left by the wayside to focus on the sexy times. As always, the author writes those scenes well, and they are quite steamy. But I just felt that was ALL this book was; like the plot points were just a means to get to the next sex scene. Disappointing. BOOK REVIEW: Sweet Home Louisiana

Erin Nicholas has done it again! The second in her Boys of the Bayou series is just as good, if not better than the first one. My Best Friend’s Mardi Gras Wedding had great characters and a fun setting and was the perfect introduction to Autre.

Sweet Home Louisiana gives us the story of Owen and Maddie. I’m not going to repeat what you can find in the blurb. But as with Tori and Josh from the first book, their chemistry is off the charts. Unlike Tory and Josh, however, they have a history that influences the way they react to each other. And that is where the real craziness starts.

We see a completely different side of Owen in this book. In the first one, he was sort of the playboy/flirt, but in this one we see why he wasn’t very serious. His heart belongs to Maddie only, and boy does he know how to sweet talk her to try to sway her decisions. Actually, not so much sweet talk, but dirty talk. Well…both.

Seriously, there was one scene in the business office where I thought my Kindle was going to combust spontaneously! I would bet good money that there are millions of women (this one included) who would love to hear the words that Owen says to Maddie.

Maddie is a strong female character, which is another thing the author does really well. The women in her novels are not shrinking violets and do not get offended. They are their own person, but also know their limitations (for the most part). Maddie thinks she knows what she wants, until she realizes that she’s pretty much had it backwards for 12 years. And can I just mention Kennedy? I believe that she is my spirit animal. Her attitude and the things she says are so realistic – I want to be her friend.

I like how the author introduces the next book naturally as part of the story. There isn’t a cliffhanger, and it doesn’t end in a weird spot. It just flows to a natural place and then stops, leaving the reader definitely wanting more.

This is one of my new favorite series, and I look forward to each entry. By my count there should be at least two more…but I’m kind of hoping that we meet a few more cousins or other Landry family members because I’m nowhere near ready to leave Autre. My Goodreads review is below.

Expected Release: May 7, 2019

Sweet Home Louisiana (Boys of the Bayou, #2)Sweet Home Louisiana by Erin Nicholas
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The second in the Boys of the Bayou series does not disappoint. Erin Nicholas has a way of writing scenes and dialogue that paint the most detailed pictures (no pun on Maddie’s talent intended). The Bayou craziness comes through clearly (Maddie’s description of her encounter with TSA had me laugh-crying), but so does the fierceness and love the extended family shares for each other. I appreciate that her heroines don’t get offended and give as good as they get. Now those are strong females! The author also does a great job keeping familiar characters involved but giving the main characters the spotlight. Owen and Maddie’s story is just what you’d hope for it to be. You know they belong together, and the ride they take to get there is plain ol’ steamy Bayou fun. This review was written based on a pre-release digital ARC. NEW RELEASE: Stay With Me by K.L. Grayson

release blitz banner.jpg

Stay With Me, an all-new standalone contemporary romance by USA Today bestselling author K.L. Grayson is live!

Cover.jpg

Stay with me.

Three simple words.

One impossible request.

I’ve loved Allie McCallister for as long as I can remember. Her happiness and well-being mean more to me than anything else, which is why when the opportunity of a lifetime presented itself, I had to take it. Three months was such a short amount of time to be apart to provide the financial stability we needed to start our lives.

It wasn’t supposed to catapult my band to stardom, and it sure as hell wasn’t supposed to set off the chain of events that pushed my relationship with Allie to the brink. Our hearts were shattered, our love tested, and when everything fell apart she begged me to leave.

Eight years ago, tragedy broke us. Now we’re back in the same little town where we once dreamed of building our future.

She’s a divorced, single mom.

I’m a damaged country music star.

There are a hundred reasons for us to stay apart.

But all it takes is one look, one touch, one kiss to know our story isn’t over. Now I have to convince her to let me stay.

BOOK REVIEW: Stay With Me

I have recently begun to enjoy second chance romances. Maybe it has something to do with spring finally arriving, and that whole re-birth/new hope attitude that comes along with it.

Stay With Me by K.L. Grayson is a well-written novel in this genre. The prologue introduces us to Allie and Jackson when they are teenagers, facing some big decisions. The rest of the story takes place eight years later (except for a couple of flashback memories) as the two try to find their way with each other again.

The plot is very straightforward without the usual back and forth/self-doubt of the characters. It also has depth, as the events that separated Allie and Jackson are realistic and heartwrenching. The doubts that do arise come from those events, and seem completely natural.

I think that’s what I appreciated the most about this book. The characters deal with real life events instead of exaggerated or far-fetched roadblocks that so often pop up in romance novels.

I don’t give away plot points, so I don’t want to say more about character introductions or interactions. I do hope that if you’re looking for a pleasant, HEA, second chance romance, that you will pick this one up. My Goodreads review is below.

Expected Release Date: April 23, 2019

Stay with MeStay with Me by K.L. Grayson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was a sweet second chance romance that had some unexpected depth to it. Allie and Jackson are teenagers in love, but life choices force them apart. Eight years later, they get the opportunity to try again. The characters were real, the plot was interesting, and there were more than a few unexpected occurrences. I liked how the author thought out the repercussions of the choices of some of the characters. There was no melodrama (as sometimes happens in romance novels); every incident had meaning and purpose. I also appreciated how the author avoided the usual “should we or shouldn’t we” and allowed the characters’ doubts to be natural. Nothing felt forced. Oh, and Mason is the cutest book kid I’ve “met” in a long time. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it, especially if you’re looking for a quick HEA read. BOOK REVIEW: Bitter Rival by J. Sterling

Grab this one on Kindle Unlimited – trust me!

I love it when an author can put a neat spin on an old trope. This take on “Romeo and Juliet” set among wineries is right up my alley. I liked the strong characters and thought that the plot was well paced. James is definitely a book boyfriend for the ages. I thought that Julia’s dad was a little bit over the top, but I appreciated how the author explained his character. In the end, it all made sense.

I enjoyed this book very much. My Goodreads review follows.

Bitter Rival

Bitter Rival by J. Sterling
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was a very quick read (less than a few hours), but it was just that fun and light. A refreshing take on Romeo and Juliet (which the characters reference a few times), it is the story of James and Julia, son and daughter of feuding families who have adjacent wineries. Everybody knows that James and Julia are meant for each other, but the family feud (and their own stubbornness) keeps them apart. I liked the characters, I liked the backstory, and I liked how they unraveled the feud and figured out how to solve the conflict. If I had anything negative to say, it would be that I wished the author had done a little more with the wine production and the concept of adding flavors to wine – make that more of a conflict between the two before reconciliation. But that’s being nitpicky, because I really enjoyed this book a lot, and will certainly look for others by this author. This review was written based on a complimentary pre-release copy.
