The Dare by Carol Wyer (Book 3 Detective Natalie Ward crime thriller series)AMZ: https://geni.us/B07N3WYYLDSocial
Jane’s daughter is a good girl. But what is she hiding?

When thirteen-year-old Savannah Hopkins doesn’t come straight home from school as she always does, her mother Jane immediately raises the alarm. With her blonde ponytail and red school jumper, someone must have spotted Savannah.

Detective Natalie Ward is determined to help the distraught mother – her own daughter is the same age as Savannah. But before Natalie and her team can get started, their worst fears are confirmed when the teenager’s broken body is found in nearby shrubland.

Evidence points towards a local recluse, but just as Natalie closes the net around him, one of Savannah’s friends, Harriet, is reported missing. Harriet might look grown up and sophisticated but she is only fourteen…

As Natalie delves into the lives of both girls, she soon discovers a sinister video on both their phones, daring the girls to disappear from their families for 48 hours. She’s sure this is the key to the case, but before she can act, Harriet’s body is found discarded on a roadside.

Natalie’s superiors don’t have to put any extra pressure on Natalie. Devastated, she and her team work without sleep, watching that video over and over. But just as she thinks they’re getting close, the person Natalie loves more than anything goes missing.

Natalie is no stranger to loss. She is terrified and the clock is ticking. Can she push through her fear to catch this depraved killer, before her loved one becomes the next victim?

This gripping rollercoaster of a read will have you up in the small hours turning the pages. Fans of Angela Marsons, Rachel Caine and Robert Dugoni will love The Dare.

BOOK REVIEW: Eighty-One Nights

I did not want this book to end.

That’s pretty much the review in a nutshell. (But I’ll give you guys a little bit more).

The beginning of this book reminded me of the Reba McEntire song, “Fancy.” In fact, through the first few chapters, I kept hearing the song lyric “Here’s your one chance Fancy don’t let me down” running through my head. Thankfully, the writer took the book in a much deeper direction than just a girl trying to earn money to get out of an undesirable situation.

Usually, a novel like this tends to focus on the young woman’s point of view and how she deals with this new world that has opened to her. This book is different because it focused equally on both perspectives, and this is what made the book more enjoyable.

I loved that I was able to understand Hutch’s point of view and how his past was affecting his decisions beyond the usual “I’m too broken to love” trope. He had a full backstory, as did Lou, which gave them depth. As a result, the story was much more fulfilling.

As Lou puts it, she is part of a beautiful illusion that she doesn’t want to end. I was right there with her. I was aware that I was nearing the end of the book, but I did not expect it to end where it did. As a result, I will be waiting eagerly for the second book in the duet, because this is one story that I cannot let go of easily.

My Goodreads review is below.

Eighty-One Nights (Beautiful Illusions Duet, #1)Eighty-One Nights by Georgia Cates
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Wrecked. There’s no other way to describe how I feel after reading this book. I am absolutely wrecked. It is such a beautifully written and passionate story; I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. As a result, I didn’t realize how close I was to the end until, well, until it just ended. In my mind, I yelled “noooooooooooo!!!!!” because I didn’t want it to end, especially not where it did! The relationship between Max and Cait (Hutch and Lou) is full-on romance, in spite of the unconventional beginning of it. The story is interesting, the characters are compelling, and the writing is such that the reader feels what the characters are feeling. Oh, and can we say super-steamy as well? An excellent read, but I sure hope the second book is released soon, because I haven’t gotten enough of Hutch and Lou yet. This review was written based on a complimentary pre-release copy.

Blurb: Beautiful, penniless American girl meets handsome, wealthy Scotsman.

Sounds like the beginning of a fairy-tale romance?

It’s not.

This story begins with a contract.

And an exchange of money.

A lot of money.

An angel perches nervously on one shoulder.

A devil lounges smugly on my other.

And even that dark little bastard is leery of what I’m doing.

Maxwell Hutcheson wants the girlfriend experience.

All of it.

And I’m going to give it to him.

I’m not supposed to enjoy being his whore.

I’m also not supposed to fall in love with him.

But I do. Both.

When our contract expires, I will walk away.

Because I have to.

But he’ll always have a piece of me.

I’ll mask my sorrow with a smile.

I’ll hide my love with indifference

… all while it’s killing me softly.

A fairy-tale romance.

It isn’t mine to have.

And this man I’ve come to love so dearly isn’t my happily ever after.

About Eighty-One Nights:

While the characters from Eighty-One Nights are entirely new, their storyline is a combination of fresh material and carefully selected themes, scenes, and settings from The Beauty Series, The Sin Trilogy, Dear Agony, and Indulge. This is intentional. I chose some of my favorite elements from previous releases and interjected them into Hutch and Lou’s story. Let’s call it a “story fusion” between our old favorites and new material. This work was briefly released under a pen name and was titled The Girlfriend Experience.

Excerpt: “No one gets to call you a whore.”

“You can.”

He stops eating and looks at me. “I’d never degrade you by calling you a whore.”

“Not a whore. Your whore. There’s a difference.”

I can almost see the wheels turning in Hutch’s head. “You’re my whore?”

“Yes. Only yours.”

“My whore.” He grins. “I don’t think that I’m supposed to like that, but I do.”

“And I don’t think I’m supposed to like being your whore, but I do. Very much.”

He reaches out for my hand and brings it to his mouth, kissing it. “You never cease to amaze me.”

“Dirty talk. Never underestimate the power of it.”

NEW RELEASE: Eleanor & Grey

Stay tuned for my review. But seriously, do NOT miss out on this book. Go get it. NOW!

E&G - BT banner.jpg

Eleanor & Grey, an all-new beautiful and emotional standalone from Brittainy C. Cherry is available now!

Eleanor & Grey FOR WEB

Greyson East left his mark on me.

As the young girl who first fell for him, I didn’t know much about life. I did know about his smiles, though, and his laughs, and the strange way my stomach flipped when he was near.

Life was perfect…until it wasn’t, and when we were forced to go our separate ways, I held on to our memories, let go of my first crush, and wished for the day I’d find him again.

When my wish came true, it was nothing like I imagined.

I couldn’t have known when I took the nanny position that it would be his children I looked after, that my new boss would be that boy I used to know, that boy who was now a man—a cold, lonely, detached man.

The smile and laugh I had loved so much were gone, now distant memories. Every part of him was covered in a fresh pain.

When he realized who I was, he made me promise to do my job and my job only.

He made me promise not to try to get to know him, not to recall the memories I’d treasured all this time.

But, sometimes, I saw the boy I’d once known in his stormy eyes. I saw the Greyson who smiled and laughed, who had stolen a young girl’s heart, and there was no doubt in my mind that this boy was worth fighting for.

I was given a second chance with the one who’d left his mark on me. All I hoped was that somehow I’d leave a mark on his soul, too.

E&G - Teaser 2 AN.jpg

Excerpt:

Eleanor

Thirty-two years old

Greyson’s assistant, Allison, finished giving me a tour of the house. “Okay, I think that’s everything. I’m going to head out now, but go ahead and make yourself comfortable. Get used to the property. Mr. East knows you’re here today, so don’t feel like you aren’t allowed to wander around a bit. If you need anything, my cell number is on the contact list in the book, or you can email me. If nothing comes up, I hope your first day goes well. Claire will be with you Monday to make sure the transition goes smoothly.” I must have looked terrified because as Allison grabbed her coat and purse to leave, she gave me a light squeeze on the shoulder. “You’re going to be fine, Eleanor. Mind over matter. You got this. Let’s touch base later in the week so I can check in on how things are going.” “Sounds great. Thanks, Allison.” After she left, I took a deep breath and flipped through a few pages in the binder. Then, I did a once-through of the house, familiarizing myself with whose room was where. There was something so unsettling about the quietness of Greyson’s home. It was so dark with an odd gloomy feeling attached to it, haunting almost. I didn’t mean dark as in the lighting situation, rather it was the energy level. There was such a heaviness in the space. The place felt like a house, not a home. If I hadn’t known any better, I wouldn’t have believed a family lived there at all. It felt so abandoned, almost like a memory frozen in time. That might’ve just been my own thoughts, thought, due to knowing about the tragedy that had taken place in the lives of the individuals who lived there. With the number of books I’d read, it wasn’t inaccurate to say my mind wandered toward the dramatics. I walked back into the kitchen, flipping through the binder, completely taken aback by the girls’ schedules. Between school, swim lessons, karate, piano lessons, physical therapy, and grief counseling, I wasn’t sure how they found the time to live a little. “Eleanor.” I leaped out of my skin at the sound of my name and turned to see Greyson standing behind me with an empty glass in his hand. He was dressed in a suit and tie, which was so strange to me. Who wore a suit and tie in their own home? I hardly wore pants when I was home alone. “Oh, Greyson, hi. Sorry I’m still here. Allison was just giving me a tour, and she said it was okay to look around a bit more.” “She made me aware.” Wow. He had responded immediately, unlike the first time I saw him. I called that progress. I smiled at him, but he didn’t smile back, and that felt like the oddest thing in the world. The old Greyson had been full of smiles. “It’s a beautiful home,” I stated, unsure what else to talk about. “It’s massive. I swear, it’s like ten times the size of my place.” He blankly stared my way as I shifted from foot to foot. “I love the décor,” I blurted out, and I hated myself the second the words left my lips. Just walk away, Eleanor. Don’t be awkward. “Those throw pillows in your living room are to die for. Where did you get them?” “The interior designer chose everything,” he replied dryly. “Oh, right, of course. My interior designer is normally the clearance section at T.J. Maxx,” I joked. “Or on special occasions, Target.” He didn’t laugh, probably because I wasn’t funny. I wondered when was the last time he’d laughed. Did he ever find anything funny anymore? We kept staring at one another in the most uncomfortable silence, though I didn’t feel as if I could pull myself away from it. I probably stared at him too long, but how could I not? I’d gone fifteen-some years without looking at him. It was understandable that I wouldn’t be able to turn away quickly. The awkwardness of it all finally came to a halt when Greyson cleared his throat. “Eleanor?” “Yes?” “I came for water.” “Oh?” I stared at him like an idiot, wide-eyed like a deer in headlights, waiting for his next words. I stood still as if he were going to expand on his interest in water. Was he offering me a drink? Were we going to sip water and catch up on things? Was I finally going to be able to ask him how he’d become the CEO of his father’s company at such a young age? What had happened to his father? His stare narrowed, and his lips turned down in a displeased fashion. He nodded once. “Hmm?” I asked. He nodded more aggressively this time, gesturing past me. I glanced behind me and realized I was standing right in front of the refrigerator, blocking the water dispenser. I stepped to the side, mentally beating myself up. Idiot. “Oh, right, of course. Well, I think I’m done here, so I’ll see myself out,” I stated, scrambling to grab my binder. “Have a good afternoon.” He didn’t reply, but that wasn’t shocking. I was quickly learning that this new Greyson didn’t have nearly as much to say as the old one.

BLOG TOUR: Scozzari by Jaimie Roberts

Presents : Blog Tour

Scozzari
by Jaimie Roberts

Series: Deviant; Book 3
Genre: NA Romance w/ Suspense

Jeremy (Jez) Scozzari

At the age of four, I was kidnapped by an enemy of my father, and as a result of that day, I have learned to fight. Since the age of eighteen, I’ve been known as Jez (One Punch) Scozzari because the full force of my fist is enough to take down my opponent with just one hit.

With the help of my dad, I turned into a tatted up machine — built for speed, built for stamina … in all senses of the word. I was prepared to fight, prepared for practically anything. But nothing had prepared me for the girl who had once stolen my heart to come catapulting back into my life again. One look from her when she turned up that day at college, and I was back to when I was ten-years-old. She was my first crush … my first kiss.

And now that she’s back, there’s no way I’m going to let her escape this time.

Caitlin Summers

When I was ten, I fell for a boy who stole my heart. He was sweet, kind and gentle. He was my first kiss — the one who made a lasting impression.

Then, at the age of thirteen, I had to move, leaving behind my heart which belonged to that sweet, kind, and gentle boy.

Now, I’m back, hearing that the sweet boy I left behind has turned into this tattooed bad boy with a reputation for fighting … and an equal reputation for sleeping around.

I was determined not to let him in. Determined to put my walls up so high that not even the famous “One Punch” Scozzari could penetrate them.

But then came my first day of college when I saw him for the very first time in almost six years. One look from him and my solid walls came down with an earth-shattering crash. Just that one look and he had me … and he knew he had me.

That was day one of Jeremy stalking me.

I’m screwed.

BOOK REVIEW: Scozzari by Jaimie Roberts

Every once in awhile there is a book that leaves me fairly confused. Sometimes the plot is good, but the characters are unlikable; sometimes the characters are great but the plot is horrible.

One of my biggest pet peeves is authors who do not fact check or do their research when writing their stories. Don’t get me wrong, I truly admire anyone who can write a novel. However, with Google literally at the fingertips of most people, there is no excuse for having factually inaccurate plot points or settings in a book. Really, it should be an amazing thing; theoretically, a person who has never left the US could write an accurate novel set in Paris. It won’t have the same reality of someone who knows the city personally, but it is possible.

That’s what makes something like Scozzari so frustrating. At the heart of the novel, there is a good story: tattooed bad-boy and love of his life meet again after being separated for a few years. Will they or won’t they? It’s a good plot line, with a subplot involving an obviously unstable admirer and a female lead who has serious baggage to worry about. It should be a great novel.

But it takes place in Virginia, in the suburbs of DC. And the descriptions of the area are completely inaccurate. (I should know; I live near there and am in the area 5 days a week). The descriptions of college are not anything like any college in the US; they’re closer to a small high school, with the attention on the comings and goings of people and bells ringing for classes. So help me, I’m a stickler for accuracy.

There are also a lot of phrases that are clearly British references. The author tries to brush this away by saying that a character has a parent that is British, but that’s kind of ridiculous. A 19-year-old like Jez would not pick up British terms. It’s inconsistent.

That’s another point in this story: the characters often seem like they have experiences that make them much older than late teens. It’s not that teenagers can’t experience bad stuff and become adults before they should. But very often in this book, I just felt like there were inconsistencies in the characters.

End result, I liked the bones of the plot, and there was enough to keep me reading, but faulty facts and locations/institutions annoy me and take me out of the story. And don’t get me started on the thinly-veiled Hannibal Lechter reference to pigs.

Still, decent enough to give it a recommend. See my Goodreads review immediately following.

Scozzari (Deviant, #3)

Scozzari by Jaimie Roberts
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I have definite mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand, it’s a likable story: tattooed, womanizing, bad-boy fighter is reunited with his childhood love…will they or won’t they re-kindle the romance? Throw in some past and current baggage that cause problems and it has a decent plot. The issue I have with the book is that it seems to be written by someone who does not live in the United States. There are several British terms used (bonnet for the hood of a car, snogging for kissing, etc.) even though the characters are American and live in Virginia. The writing is stilted, and it is fairly obvious that the author does not have a clear idea as to how American colleges work; the references seem more in the lines of a high school instead of a college. In addition, the amount of character background makes it seem like the characters should be much older than they are. Their experiences do not seem to fit 18 and 19-year-olds…more like early-20s. And it could have used an editor because there was a lot of exposition that could have been cut. It took too long to get to the heart of things. I’m giving it three stars for the plot itself and for some interesting characters. This review was written based on a complimentary pre-release copy.
