Books On Tour (Review): Can I Give My Husband Back? by Kristen Bailey

I really enjoyed Has Anyone Seen My Sex Life? the first in what looks like a series from a very talented and astute author. And I liked this one even more. Ms. Bailey has upped her game, and the result is a winner of a book.

In this second book, we follow Emma. She is the second oldest of the Callaghan sisters, so I am sensing a pattern; please let it be so! A compassionate heart surgeon, she is divorced from her cheating bastard of a husband (and that’s treating him nicely). This is her story.

I love how this author builds layers. Characters who seemingly have a small part in the plot sometimes end up sharing a nugget of wisdom that has great impact. A perfect example is little Lewis, one of her patients, who wisely states that Dr. C “fixes hearts.” He has no idea how accurate he is. Oh, and he has quite the adventure as well (great scene, that).

Anybody who has been involved in a divorce will be able to find a character in this book to relate to. Emma moves between anger, self-doubt, and “screw him” seamlessly. The emotional roller coaster is real and accurately portrayed. Maddie, her secretary, is loyal and always looks out for Emma’s best interests.

And then there are the sisters. We already met Meg in the first book. I liked how part of this one overlapped so that there was a common timeline. It tied the books together neatly, instead of them being in a vacuum. Meg doesn’t figure much in this book. Neither does Grace, who makes a cameo with big news that I assume will be part of her story.

We do get healthy doses of Beth and Lucy, the two youngest Callaghans, and boy I cannot WAIT for their stories. Lucy particularly had me laughing out loud several times. While some might see her as mere comic relief (and there is plenty of that, especially when she is Elsa), she is also fiercely loyal to her sisters. She made me think of the yappy little dog who will protect its owner.

One thing I noticed in Meg’s story, and it’s even more pronounced here, is that the author doesn’t hit you over the head with lessons or plot points. She tells a person’s story, and it’s up to the reader to get what they want out of it. I appreciate the craft that goes into that.

Ms. Bailey knows how to set and describe a scene so that it feels like the reader is actually there. From the aforementioned Elsa moments to Beth’s birthday, to a raucous and thoroughly enjoyable trivia competition that left tears rolling down my face, the humanity and the humor are captured perfectly.

I also liked how she didn’t wrap everything up neatly with a bow. While that’s fine for some books, the overlapping timelines from the first and second books illuminate that life is an ongoing story. I assume that we will be able to follow Emma’s progression through the other sisters’ stories.

I hope I’m right about this, because it means that I’ll get three more chances to visit the Callaghan sisters. I look forward to Grace’s because I think I will be able to relate to her. And I really can’t wait for Lucy’s!

Seriously, do yourself a favor and pick up Has Anyone Seen My Sex Life? and then move on to this one so you’re call caught up.

Blog Tour (Review): Attracting Aubrey by Avery Flynn

I read a lot of different genres, but I realized that it had been a while since I read some lighthearted romances. This book, along with its companions (more on that later), was a perfect choice.

Aubrey and her four best friends from college go on a singles cruise together. For her, it’s a chance to get away from the bakery she runs. Little did she know that she would be wrapped up in some deceit and romance so quickly into the cruise.

Carter is a movie star who is taking the cruise as proof that he can disappear into his character and become unrecognizable. What happens when he gets pulled into Aubrey’s prank on her friend before the ship even sets sail?

I’m not going to give away the answer to that question. But I will say it is a simple set up in a fun location, with likable characters.

I liked Aubrey’s sass. She’s obviously the “bad girl” of the group, but she seemed like fun. I liked the interplay between her and Carter. The dialogue was snappy, and the chemistry was off the charts hot.

As someone who cruises a lot, I could nitpick quite a few details about the cruise itself, but that’s not the focus of the book. I understand that’s the situation that the characters were put in, and the authors had to make the best of it.

Note that I said authors (plural). There are five books in this…I am not sure what to call it. Not exactly an anthology, but not a series either. Different authors wrote each book, and each one focuses on one of the friends. As I read and review, I will link to each of them here: Kissing Kendall, Gaming Grace, Loving Liv. (Blog tours on differing dates, so links may take a while – there will be no review on Beguiling Benjamin).

If you’re looking for something for a brain break, give these books a try.

About Avery Flynn

USA Today bestselling romance author Avery Flynn has three slightly-wild children, loves a hockey-addicted husband and is desperately hoping someone invents the coffee IV drip.

She fell in love with romance while reading Johanna Lindsey’s Mallory books. It wasn’t long before Avery had read through all the romance offerings at her local library. Needing a romance fix, she turned to Harlequin’s four books a month home delivery service to ease the withdrawal symptoms. That worked for a short time, but it wasn’t long before the local book stores’ staff knew her by name.

Avery was a reader before she was a writer and hopes to always be both. She loves to write about smartass alpha heroes who are as good with a quip as they are with their *ahem* other God-given talents. Her heroines are feisty, fierce and fantastic. Brainy and brave, these ladies know how to stand on their own two feet and knock the bad guys off theirs.

Okay, now to the review. This time, we get to follow Claire as she navigates a new family dynamic (her husband has moved out). Fortunately, the ladies of the Forest River PTA are there to help. Or hurt, as is the case with a couple of them.

I liked how Claire managed to keep her wits about her, even in the face of malicious gossip. I got an especially good laugh from the scene during “Snack with Snowflakes.” And that event in itself gave me a chuckle as it is a wry commentary on today’s pervasive over-sensitivity.

I also appreciated Claire’s journey to realizing who her friends were and how trustworthy they could be. That was some nice character growth from the previous book. Her realizations about relationships (dating) were also realistic.

I do have to say that given the current world situation, I was cringing through the scene where Claire was sick but interviewing for a job. It was amusing, but it is funny how quickly perspectives can change.

If people are not familiar with PTA moms (or other parent groups), the actions of Donna and Mia may verge on too much of a caricature. But I can tell you that they are accurate portrayals. There is always at least one person (and a few henchmen) who try to stir people up. Putting faces I know on the characters made some of the scenes much more enjoyable 😊

If you are looking for a book with wicked gossip, adults that act more immature than their kids, and a lot of heart, look no further. Grab this one today, but consider reading Go On, Girl (remember, it’s FREE for a limited time) first to get the whole backstory.

BOOK REVIEW: Double Fudge and Danger

Available now

If you are looking for a light-hearted mystery, look no further than the newest Cambria Clyne book by Erin Huss. This is the third book in the series, but the author does a fantastic job of not alienating new readers.

(Side note #1: That’s one of my pet peeves. I totally appreciate an author who can slyly reference previous books and makes me want to read them to see what I’ve missed. I dislike authors who make so many references that I feel like I need to stop reading and get previous books just to catch up. This book is 100% the former)

From Cambria’s 3 year old who yells at her in Vietnamese (thanks to her erstwhile babysitters the Nguyens) to the quirky tenants of the apartment complexes, the book is filled with well-written characters. The plot is fast paced and detailed, but never feels heavy. The author seems to speak from experience when it comes to property management.

(Side note #2: I worked at an 840-unit apartment complex for a few years when I was in college. Tenants not knowing what constitutes an emergency, busybodies, and all of the other quirks mentioned in this book are absolutely true to form.)

This book just released today, but the first two are currently on sale for 99 cents each. I highly recommend grabbing these while you can; you’ll be glad you started the series! (Links are at the bottom of this post)

Following is my Goodreads review:

This light-hearted mystery was super-fun to read. Cambria is a heroine I can really get behind. She’s witty, self-deprecating, and kind of a mess, but she’s also good-hearted and smart. The plot clipped along at a good pace. The characters were vibrant and real. I especially liked the tone of the book. I was very much reminded of the TV show “Psych” as I was reading; it had that clever-but-not-serious vibe to it that I really love (the 3 year old’s temper tantrum in Vietnamese about killed me). This is the first of the series that I have read, but the author smartly does not make arcane references; she mentioned just enough that made me want to go back and buy the previous two (which I did). Also, having worked at an 840-unit apartment complex, I can verify that everything Cambria says about property management and tenants is absolutely true! A delightful series that I am glad to have found. I received a digital ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
