Here to Stay by Adriana Herrerra – Blog Tour (Review)

What could have been a run-of-the-mill, enemies to lovers/workplace romance story was made much more enjoyable by the author’s perfect capturing of a unique lifestyle and attitude that belongs to one group of people.

Every major city has its quirks, and life-long residents grow up incorporating them (often unknowingly) into their own characters. There is no place where this is truer than New York City.

People from there have a style and persona that is identifiable as “strictly NYC.” That even carries into the Boroughs, and further into neighborhoods. I lived in the city, so I’m very familiar with most of them.

I think that’s why I enjoyed this book so much. The author did a fantastic job of capturing that certain something New Yorkers have. From the lexicon to the clothing styles, it all felt familiar and a little bit comforting.

I especially liked Julia. She reminded me of a Dominican I once worked with in Midtown. Big and bold, but at times unsure in new situations. I also enjoyed Julia’s mom’s attitudes toward her daughter living in Texas. That’s another NYC thing…nothing is as good as what you can get in the city (even down to hand lotion).

I thought Rocco was an interesting character. He was working class Queens (also familiar) but painted as the bad guy in Julia’s eyes. I enjoyed watching the two of them slowly grow to understand each other and realize how much they actually had in common. It showed the importance of looking beyond the surface of people.

I got the feeling that this was written for a younger set of readers. Due to my teenage son, I’m pretty up on slang and current phrases, but don’t use them myself. The characters in this book used them consistently, especially when the NYC transplants were together. It made the book very contemporary.

I would highly recommend this well-written and “current” book. I think a lot of people will be able to identify with the characters and their situations.

BOOK REVIEW: Bitter Rival by J. Sterling

Grab this one on Kindle Unlimited – trust me!

I love it when an author can put a neat spin on an old trope. This take on “Romeo and Juliet” set among wineries is right up my alley. I liked the strong characters and thought that the plot was well paced. James is definitely a book boyfriend for the ages. I thought that Julia’s dad was a little bit over the top, but I appreciated how the author explained his character. In the end, it all made sense.

I enjoyed this book very much. My Goodreads review follows.

Bitter Rival

Bitter Rival by J. Sterling
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was a very quick read (less than a few hours), but it was just that fun and light. A refreshing take on Romeo and Juliet (which the characters reference a few times), it is the story of James and Julia, son and daughter of feuding families who have adjacent wineries. Everybody knows that James and Julia are meant for each other, but the family feud (and their own stubbornness) keeps them apart. I liked the characters, I liked the backstory, and I liked how they unraveled the feud and figured out how to solve the conflict. If I had anything negative to say, it would be that I wished the author had done a little more with the wine production and the concept of adding flavors to wine – make that more of a conflict between the two before reconciliation. But that’s being nitpicky, because I really enjoyed this book a lot, and will certainly look for others by this author. This review was written based on a complimentary pre-release copy.

NEW RELEASE: Bitter Rival by J. Sterling

Yup, I’ve been a busy reading bee lately! I really enjoyed this fun, quick read.

BR - RB Banner.jpg

James Russo is enemy #1.

Hating him is in my blood.

Bitter Rival, an all-new forbidden romance from New York Times bestselling author J. Sterling, is available now!

BitterRival_FrontCover_LoRes.jpg

Our families have been at war for generations; a bitter rivalry with no end in sight. All I’ve ever wanted to do was make wine, but one night with James will cost me everything.

I shouldn’t be attracted to him… but I am.

I definitely shouldn’t want to sleep with him… but I do.

Is following my heart worth the risk of losing my vineyard and my legacy?

Because in my family, there could be no greater betrayal than sleeping with the enemy.

About J. Sterling

My goal is to write books that you can get lost in and stories that will leave you with a smile and a full heart. If you can forget about the real world while you’re reading and fall in love with my characters, then I’ve done my job. A lot of what I write has real life aspects in it, but that’s what makes the stories so relatable- the fact that they could happen to anyone… and have! I live in California with my son, Blake. If you can’t find me sitting behind a computer screen, then there’s a good chance I’m sitting in the bleachers of a baseball stadium watching him play. I love traveling to new places, meeting my readers and spending time with the love of my life, my very own second chance romance, who inspires me daily. I know you have a million books to choose from and I am humbled, grateful and thankful each time you choose to read one of mine, or tell someone else to read them. Thank you. JSterling.jpg

BOOK REVIEW: Tough Luck by Liv Morris

Free on KU, $2.99 to buy

If you are a fan of sports romances or light enemies-to-friends-to-lovers romances, this is the book for you. Amazon states that it is the second in a series, but it is a total stand-alone. A light, easy read. Below is my Goodreads review.

Tough Luck by Liv Morris

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

As far as romances go, this one was pretty decent. A hero who swears off women to concentrate on his game, until the day he’s ready to meet “the one;” a heroine who is career-focused until she meets “the one.” And, oh yeah, they hate each other but have to work together. The reader knows from the get-go what is going to happen, but that’s okay because the journey there has some laughs and the characters are fun to get to know. The banter between Amelia and Bryce is real and give insight to their characters. There isn’t a lot of depth, the way they both treat their careers was a little annoying, and the tv show made no sense. But in a breezy rom-com, I wouldn’t expect much more. I give it 3.5 stars for being a nice sports-themed, enemies-to-lovers romance.
