Legacy (Foster)-Book Review-Contemporary Romance-Available Now

Some authors write linear series where stories continue chronologically. Others write standalones, where there may be familiar characters who are loosely tied together, but you don’t necessarily need to read the books in order to get the full picture.

And then there is MA Foster.

She writes stories that are a web of connections. Characters from previous books pop up when you least expect, and backstories are rich in detail.

In short, she has created a complicated, real-world for her characters to inhabit. They live and breathe more than any author I have read recently. And the location of Heritage Bay feels familiar like I’ve taken a vacation there.

Everything is just that real.

In Legacy, we get Dylan and Katie. But it’s not as simple as “it’s their story.” The author doesn’t work that way. It does largely belong to Dylan, mainly because he is the family member who gets the focus this time. But each of their stories is full – Katie is not just a love interest. She has her own story as well.

This is where the author excels. Because again, it’s not necessarily linear. We get a lot of Dylan’s story, but we don’t know where Katie fits in until later in the book. By that point, you’ll be a full believer in fate.

I also like how Ms. Foster knows how to seamlessly move from emotion to scorching romance to accurate observations on life. She’s a consummate juggler. Even phrases such as “tomorrow is a gift, not a promise” that could seem trite seem absolutely natural coming from her characters. You believe them. You root for them. And by God, you feel for them.

Just when you think you have been hit with a helluva gut punch, she’s got another one ready for you. It’s not an over-exaggeration to say she knows how to get a reader in the feels…repeatedly. But again, that’s the strength of the characters and the world she has created. You get to know them personally.

Another point about the web of connections: this means that the reader gets to hear from characters whose stories have already been told – but from the current characters’ points of view.

For example, those who have read her past books know what has happened to Marcus. But he is here again as part of Dylan’s story. This method adds to the richness of the details and helps build that realism.

You’ll notice that I haven’t said much about Dylan and Katie’s story. I have my reasons, but first and foremost it’s because I firmly believe a reader needs to experience them on their own time and in their own way. If I tell you what happens to them, or how it happens that will ruin it.

You’ll just have to trust me that if you’ve read her past books (like Cougar and Baller) you’ll get more details on those characters as well. And if you thought that the characters in those books were complex…you haven’t met Dylan yet. Hold on.

It’s best to just let yourself move to Heritage Bay while you read and allow yourself to be immersed in the world MA Foster has created.

If you’re like me, you’ll be wishing they were real, and you could meet them.

She’s just that good.

The Stepsisters (Mallery)-Blog Tour-Women’s Fiction-Available Now

This is 100% family drama from beginning to end, and I couldn’t put it down.

Right from the beginning, I knew that the story would have many tense situations. I’m not exactly sure how I knew that based on a child throwing up (opening scene). But it certainly seemed to set the tone.

The author did a good job of making each of the stepsisters (Daisy, Sage, and Cassidy) individuals with their own sets of issues. None of them were a stereotype, and all three seemed like real people with real problems.

They each had very different lives from each other and from anything that I’ve known. I also couldn’t relate to them personality-wise too much. But I still liked them.

Sometimes a character is so different from what a reader personally knows or is familiar with it makes it hard to understand their motivations. That wasn’t the case here. The author succeeded in making the sisters understandable, if not exactly relatable.

That sounds weird, I know. I think it was more that I could read from a detached point of view instead of being swayed by one sister’s story over another’s.

Buy Links can be found underneath “About the Author”

It goes without saying that all three ladies experience tremendous personal growth over the course of the story. What I found interesting was that not only did they share a dad, but they could all pretty much trace their problems with each other to Joanne (Cassidy and Sage’s mother).

She was a real piece of work. And it was also interesting that she continued to be a thorn in Daisy’s side even late in the book, as I see her as directly responsible for knowing how to manipulate Sage.

(No spoilers, you’ll have to read it to understand what I mean).

I found myself wondering whether Joanne was bitter toward Daisy for perceived wrongs in the past and was actively still trying to hurt her emotionally. I think maybe that’s accurate.

Sage was an interesting character as well. She obviously had the brunt of Joanne’s dysfunction and carried it into her adult life. I had an aunt like that (not the same dysfunction as the book but being exposed to a situation for longer and carrying it into adulthood).

I also liked Esmerelda. She was no-nonsense and loyal to Daisy. It seemed as if she served as Daisy’s conscience at times, or maybe her alter ego, being tough when Daisy couldn’t be.

As far as the plot, there’s too much to recount. But the stepsisters journey together to a place of new understanding as each of them recognizes their perspectives and how they were shaped by events they didn’t have full understanding of in the past.

I know that was convoluted. But as I said, it’s a family drama, and those are never straightforward. If you’re looking for a more dramatic beach read, I would definitely recommend this book.

Here to Stay by Adriana Herrerra – Blog Tour (Review)

What could have been a run-of-the-mill, enemies to lovers/workplace romance story was made much more enjoyable by the author’s perfect capturing of a unique lifestyle and attitude that belongs to one group of people.

Every major city has its quirks, and life-long residents grow up incorporating them (often unknowingly) into their own characters. There is no place where this is truer than New York City.

People from there have a style and persona that is identifiable as “strictly NYC.” That even carries into the Boroughs, and further into neighborhoods. I lived in the city, so I’m very familiar with most of them.

I think that’s why I enjoyed this book so much. The author did a fantastic job of capturing that certain something New Yorkers have. From the lexicon to the clothing styles, it all felt familiar and a little bit comforting.

I especially liked Julia. She reminded me of a Dominican I once worked with in Midtown. Big and bold, but at times unsure in new situations. I also enjoyed Julia’s mom’s attitudes toward her daughter living in Texas. That’s another NYC thing…nothing is as good as what you can get in the city (even down to hand lotion).

I thought Rocco was an interesting character. He was working class Queens (also familiar) but painted as the bad guy in Julia’s eyes. I enjoyed watching the two of them slowly grow to understand each other and realize how much they actually had in common. It showed the importance of looking beyond the surface of people.

I got the feeling that this was written for a younger set of readers. Due to my teenage son, I’m pretty up on slang and current phrases, but don’t use them myself. The characters in this book used them consistently, especially when the NYC transplants were together. It made the book very contemporary.

I would highly recommend this well-written and “current” book. I think a lot of people will be able to identify with the characters and their situations.

Books On Tour (Review): Summer at Orchard House by Ellyn Oaksmith

Technically a romance, this story of three sisters trying to save their dad’s vineyard is also a testament to the importance of keeping the American Dream alive. It’s the perfect story for the times.

Right off the bat, I could tell that the author had a vast knowledge of the inner-working of vineyards, a thought that was confirmed the further I read. Whether it was from experience or copious amounts of research, it showed in the details. It also made the vineyard almost a character itself, instead of just a pretty setting for a story.

I think this was important because the vineyard is central to the plot, and it being more than an inanimate object was added depth to the importance of the plot of land. It became symbolic of everything the family had in life.

That was my favorite part of the whole plotline. From the first phone call that Carmen receives from her sister through the stories that unfold, the reason why the vineyard must be saved is clear. It’s their lifeblood, their representation of their family, and their part of the American Dream. Everything that America is to millions of people.

I loved how Mr. Alvarez imbued that in his daughters, even if they didn’t exactly realize that at the time. I could relate to the feelings that Carmen had when she realized that she should have paid more attention to her father when she was younger. She regrets not learning from him more, and with his condition, it’s harder to do in the present time. That hit home for me.

I also liked how the author was fair to Evan, giving him depth as well. His character could have been the rich, annoying neighbor stereotype, and there were times that that kind of attitude appeared. However, I thought the author did him a great service in making him human and vulnerable. His first introduction where he felt lonely after meeting with Mr. Alvarez stuck with me through the whole book.

I really enjoyed the journey of all of the characters throughout the story. I would highly recommend this book for many reasons, but mainly for the attention to the heart of the story: the importance of maintaining and keeping sight of dreams.

Books On Tour (Review): Accidental Secrets

I read a lot, as the few of you who follow this blog already know. So, when I find a story that goes off the beaten path, I get excited. Accidental Secrets falls right into that category.

I thought that set up was interesting. High school sweethearts separated by her mom (very Romeo & Juliet) find each other again years later through little quirks of life choices. Some might even call it fate. But there is a lot of baggage to unpack, and the path to a “happily ever after” is never smooth.

I liked how the characters were fully realized in this book. I got a full sense of who each of them was individually, and they weren’t just characters. I think that the job selections for Rachel and Mike contributed to that. The author gave thought to their jobs instead of just having them be generic business person.

I also enjoyed reading how Reagan worked her way into the story. (No spoilers). I think giving her a voice in the whole matter also made it seem more realistic. She wasn’t just a bratty teen there for atmosphere; she was a catalyst to several plot points.

The author wrote the story in a way that was easy to read. Everything flowed nicely and the shifts between character perspective were smooth. This is the third book in a trilogy, and there are several references to events in the previous books. It can be read as a stand-alone, but you will definitely enjoy the story more if you have read the first two books. Treat yourself to the trilogy for the holidays!

Blog Tour w/Review: Landon & Shay, Part One

I am not a huge fan of angst. I think there is enough of it in real life that I don’t seek it out in books that I choose to read. There is currently only one author who I make an exception for, as I am never disappointed at the depth of her characters.

It’s FREE in KU – what are you waiting for?!?!?

Landon and Shay, Part One is another of Brittainy C. Cherry’s studies of a relationship fraught with trouble, with seemingly insurmountable odds against the success of the couple. I could tell from the beginning that the animosity between Landon and Shay was mainly due to how much they actually had in common, even though they were not aware of that fact at first. Or, they might have been aware of their similarities subconsciously, which is what caused each of them to “hate” the other.

This is the strength of the author’s writing. She creates complex characters who are realistic. They have substance and personality and are intriguing enough to make the reader want to know more about them, to grow along with them. I particularly loved how she used Shay’s character, and her propensity for personality analysis, to dig deeper into the character’s psyches. That was brilliant and extremely well-done.

I know it seems as if I am speaking in riddles, but I think that one of the best things about her books is the journey that the reader undertakes right along with the characters. I can’t describe a plot point without giving away where the characters are at that time, which would, in turn, give away the beautiful arc of the plot.

And that would ruin the whole story.

Oh, and there is a twist that I absolutely did not see coming; it left me stunned, causing me to read more carefully to see what I may have missed.

Honestly, if you have read any of her books, you know what I am talking about. And if you haven’t read any of her books, why the heck not? As I said at the beginning, I am not a huge fan of angst, but her books leave me reeling and wanting more. “Epic love story” is a phrase that is often over-used, but it certainly applies to this story. I will be eagerly awaiting Part Two to finish the journey with Landon and Shay.

Landon & Shay: Part One (L&S Duet, #1)Landon & Shay: Part One by Brittainy C. Cherry
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Wrecked and gutted. That’s how this book left m, but in the best ways possible. The author’s ability to capture every minute detail of a relationship and make the reader feel like they are experiencing it themselves is unmatched. I have virtually nothing in common with these characters, but I felt so deeply for them it was amazing. My only complaint about this book is that we have to wait for part two! Quick Book Review: I Wanna Sext You Up

I Wanna Sext You Up (Let's Talk About Sext, #2)I Wanna Sext You Up by Evie Claire
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

What could have been a run of the mill romance is elevated by the professional relationship of Lorie and Saam. The medical ethics that are addressed throughout the novel add a level of importance to their decisions. I appreciated that, as it gave me pause to evaluate their actions along with them – I like a romance that makes me think. The author also did a great job of building their relationship so that it all seemed very natural (and at times, hot!). I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would and look forward to reading more from this author. Thank you to NetGalley, Random House-Loveswept, and the author for a complimentary, pre-release, digital ARC of this book.
