BOOK REVIEW: The Right Guy by Kate O’Keeffe

Only 99 cents!

Guys, I love this author, and this is a departure for her. It’s the first time she has written an “alternating pov” story. I think she did a neat job of it. It’s set in San Francisco, and while I would have loved to have seen a few more landmarks and recognizable areas to really identify it, I liked the shout outs to Fisherman’s Wharf and Marin County with the redwoods. If you are looking for a light romance, grab this one. You won’t be disappointed. Below is my Goodreads review.

The Right Guy: A romantic comedy by Kate O’Keeffe
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I really enjoyed this book. I love Kate O’Keeffe, and while different from her other books, it was a nice departure that I thought she did very well. Told from alternating points of view, it’s the story of Jake and Taylor. Taylor is best friends with Jake’s sister and has practically been a part of the family forever. Of course, there are going to be doubts as Jake and Taylor face their actual feelings for each other. Add in an ill-timed psychic prediction that causes more doubts, and a few odd encounters and it makes for a fun, light read. I didn’t think that Jake’s “playboy” past was fleshed out enough to truly believe it, which in turn made Taylor’s wavering back and forth seem a little bit much. But it wasn’t enough to stop me from enjoying the story. The electricity between the two was expressive and real. A four-star read from me because it let me escape and enjoy their story. I received a digital ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

BOOK REVIEW: Tough Luck by Liv Morris

If you are a fan of sports romances or light enemies-to-friends-to-lovers romances, this is the book for you. Amazon states that it is the second in a series, but it is a total stand-alone. A light, easy read. Below is my Goodreads review.

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

As far as romances go, this one was pretty decent. A hero who swears off women to concentrate on his game, until the day he’s ready to meet “the one;” a heroine who is career-focused until she meets “the one.” And, oh yeah, they hate each other but have to work together. The reader knows from the get-go what is going to happen, but that’s okay because the journey there has some laughs and the characters are fun to get to know. The banter between Amelia and Bryce is real and give insight to their characters. There isn’t a lot of depth, the way they both treat their careers was a little annoying, and the tv show made no sense. But in a breezy rom-com, I wouldn’t expect much more. I give it 3.5 stars for being a nice sports-themed, enemies-to-lovers romance.

BOOK REVIEW: His Surprise Package

My rating: 3 of 5 stars


This was a quick read, mainly because there was not a lot of depth to it. That’s not to say that it wasn’t a good plot, because it was pretty decent: a marriage mistake that the two people try and work their way through. She has some barriers, he has some baggage. I liked the interaction between the two and especially liked Teri’s growth. There were a couple of moments that seemed a little bit “out of character,” but the reasons for the character motivations helped make more sense of the actions. It was a fun read, and I would recommend it for a quick brain break. It would be four stars if there were a little bit more depth to the characters, but it is a solid 3.5. I received a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

BOOK REVIEW: First Corpse, The Appetizer

In re-reading this review before posting, I am not sure that I did it justice. In total, this was not an awful book. The heroine was endearing. Her klutziness was amusing and her disbelief at the situation she found herself in was real. The scenes with her family were actually pretty funny. I think that the author just overshot the goals for the plot; there were two characters who had similar names that I had trouble keeping straight, and I am still unsure about the motivations of a couple of others.

It is the first in a series, all in the theme of “Corpses,” which is a play on words for “Courses.” It is entirely possible that future books will clarify some of the characters and the motivations will become more apparent. As I say below, the characters were enough that I would give the second book a try to see where it goes. Below is my Goodreads review.

First Corpse: The Appetizer by Carie Toeller

I have mixed reactions to this book. On the one hand, I liked the premise: Highly recognizable TV personality gets involved in some international intrigue and has her life taken over by the FBI investigation. There was a good balance between amusing and exciting moments. However, I thought that it took too long to get to a reason for all of the FBI involvement. There were several chapters at the beginning where I felt lost because enough wasn’t revealed in a timely manner. Even when I got a handle on the plot, there were still some murky international connections. The big reveal of the reason for the international intrigue also felt a little bit heavy-handed; I didn’t think there was enough build up to have it make sense. That being said, I liked the main characters enough to probably read follow up books in the series. I’ll give 3.5 stars for a hunky FBI agent and a likable heroine. Tightening the plot would have made it a solid 4.

BOOK REVIEW: Lady Guardians: Grace’s Redemption

Lady Guardians: Grace’s Redemption by Sydney Aaliyah Michelle

My rating: 3 of 5 stars


Biker novels are not my usual genre, but I’m always looking to expand my reading horizons, and this seemed like a good place to start. Overall, I liked the plot. I thought that it had some good points. I wanted to know exactly why Mase made the choices that he did at the beginning; that was unclear. I liked the details of a biker “family” and where loyalties are supposed to be strongest. However, I felt that this book could have benefited from a good editing. There were several typos and grammatical errors that were jarring, as well as sketchy location references. For example, from my understanding, the main location is near Washington DC; at one point it seemed as if the author was saying that New York City was “just across the bay.” There were a few instances of this. That being said, I did get drawn into Grace and Mase’s relationship, and I look forward to reading the continuation of their story. I received a digital copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

BOOK REVIEW: Over the Fence

As you saw from the previous post, I was fortunate enough to take part in the cover re-reveal for this book. I love getting to know an author through their older books, and this is no exception.

“Over the Fence” by Melanie Moreland is a contemporary romance that explores how two people can learn to trust each other when they haven’t experienced a lot of trust themselves. Nat has deep secrets that have caused him to live a solitary life. Kourtney is trying to make a life for herself away from her family. When she moves next door to Nat, it opens both of their eyes to possibilities that they couldn’t have previously imagined.

You know me, and I will repeat it every time, I don’t like giving away plot; there is just too much that is best to experience as a reader. Suffice to say that romance can sometimes be sappy or unrealistic. “Over the Fence” is neither of those. It is very real, the characters are flawed, which makes them human (no haunted billionaire here!)

My only complaint is that I wanted a more satisfying resolution to Kourtney’s family conflict. Something that had shaped her so much deserved a little more…karma. I liked how Nat’s wrapped up, however.

The author also uses a clever epilogue to put the finishing touches on Kourtney and Nat’s story. This was a very satisfying read, and I am fortunate to have found this author. I highly recommend it. The book is available on Kindle Unlimited – you can follow the links in the Cover Re-Reveal post.

I love a different approach to romance, and this book has that. Nat and Kourtney do not meet cute as much as they meet unique, over a shared fence. Because they get to know each other without getting caught up in appearances, they obtain true understanding of each other, which leads to recognition of kindred spirits. There is just enough conflict to make the plot interesting without being overly-dramatic (although I would have liked a more satisfying resolution with Kourtney’s family). But the story between the two grows slowly, allowing the reader to share the growth of feelings. Bonus points for the clever Epilogue that puts the finishing touches on the story. This was definitely a 5-star read, and I know I will be re-reading it in the future. I received a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
